WHAT IS MOD STYLE?

Those who are not aware of the mod style will often come up with the question what is mod style? In this article we will briefly explain about mod style, its origin and revival of mod style. The mod movement that had originated in 1960s in London was not just a fashion or a type of pop music but a lifestyle. Short for ‘modernist’ mod style was generally characterized by very bold and bright fashions. The movement originally began from Britain where the mod style was first a subculture developed by teenagers. They wanted a new style or image and want to break the formal tradition being worn by their parents.

Looking into the origin of mod subculture, it usually began in late 1950s as the ‘teddy boys’ who were influenced by the rock & roll music which become very popular in United States. These boys or teens developed a style based on being hip, sharp dressers, with streamlined clothing in solid colors. The newly developed mod style was warmly welcome by the youngsters. However, in Europe, the style i.e. mod style not only included mod clothing but also a lifestyle choice. It has been also revealed that the mod or teens met at coffee shops as well as in all night clubs and rode around on Vespa scooters.

The popular pop music bands such as the Beatles are also known for mod style as they helped in popularizing the mod style. Explanation of mod style shows that the mod lifestyle was centered on both fashion and music. The mod style was considered as an urban style, in fact the mods often fought against the rockers, a harsher youth-centric group with roots in rural areas of Britain, known for wearing leather & riding motorcycles rather than colorful Italian scooters.

The mod style gained popularity and many other groups picked up the style and the movement reached its highest peak in the mid 1960s. Later on it no longer became a rebellious subculture since too many people started wearing mod clothing. By about 1967, the mod style was replaced by hippie, bohemian, and psychedelic styles. After its mid 1960s heyday, mod clothing styles were revived several times, most notably in Britain in the late 1970s and in the United States in the early 1980s. However, the mod style explained above will briefly let you know about this style.
